Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay grew up with her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was drawn by art. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote the day to literature, art theatre, and various other pursuits. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled watching the historic Civil Rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to write a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to sit at the home of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to switch careers into the publicity sector. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. She launched in 1999 her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her company launched a range different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
